I struggled with severe anxiety for many years and also stayed away from medications (including alcohol). What helped me a great deal was starting an exercise regimen. I took up jogging again and doing regular aerobic exercise helps to strengthen breathing and the cardio vascular system. An anxiety attack is similar in many ways to a physical workout, so the healthier a person is, the better they will be able to respond to the symptoms of anxiety.
I went through some cognitive therapy counseling and I understand about how just talking about the subject can bring on anxiety symptoms, but it is also an opportunity to start monitoring the thought process to see what assumptions are being made to create the fear and anxiety to begin with.
Ultimately, the anxiety response is based on the thoughts we have in certain situations, whether those situations are social gatherings, crowded places, being caught in traffic, visiting a doctor, or whatever. In my case, I have many food allergies that caused inflammation in my esophagus and sometimes it would go into spasms where I could not swallow even water. Living with a stricture like that over time caused me to start avoiding social gatherings and going to the doctor because the dilation procedure was very uncomfortable in times past.
Whether anxiety is caused by something real or imagined, it is our thought process that ultimately dictates how we respond to it. The anxiety response does not know or care if the danger is real, it simply responds, and is doing so in order to save the persons life by constricting blood flow in extremities to protect vital organs. It is the “fight or flight” response.
Even though a person undergoing a panic attack may feel like they are dying or losing control, that is not really the truth. The body is trying to save their life. Another thing that helped me when I felt an attack coming on, was to simply give myself permission to experience it. Invite it in instead of trying to fight it off. When you do that, it has no where else to go and will wash over you like a wave and then dissipate. I know this is difficult to do at first, but to be free of this type of problem, it has to be dealt with head on. That means getting into the situations that trigger the anxiety and learning to challenge your thought process and allowing yourself to experience the anxiety symptoms without any judgements on yourself.
Hope this helps some. It is a process and it just takes time, but it is important for your boyfriend to start educating himself and taking action. He’s not alone. Millions of people deal with similar issues every day.
