The immediate steps followed by medical personnel that respond to your emergency call are restoring blood flow in the heart as soon as possible. Normal blood flow ensures that your body returns to your normal state and minimizes the damage done. This should be done immediately to minimize the risk of permanent damage.

The first thing to measure is the amount of electrical activity in your heart. This tells the personnel what exactly is going on there. For e.g. a defibrillator is used, if the heartbeat is abnormal or there are signs of cardiac arrest. A defibrillator is a device that literally “shocks” your heart into beating again. Commonly seen in movies, this device has 2 paddles that transmit huge amounts of charge to your heart, “shocking it” into beating again.

Another technique which may save a person’s life is CPR. For this to happen, the person has to be trained and qualified and should be aware of the proper method to perform it.

There are many causes for heart attacks and Blood Clots are one of them. As the term suggests, if there is any kind of blocked artery or a blood clot, it can stop the normal flow of blood. There are special medications and drugs which help to remove these blockages by dissolving them.

NEWER, ADVANCED TREATMENTS

Apart from the above mentioned treatments, doctors have started recommending another advanced treatment known as Cardio Cerebral Resuscitation. This is a mixture of the normally practiced treatments. Firstly, compressions are performed on the patient’s chest. This is done for around 2 minutes. Next, we try to restore normalcy by performing CPR or by using a defibrillator. Generally this works. If not, then the whole process is repeated again. Also, a drug called epinephrine is sometimes used. On using this, the blood vessels get constricted.

Another newer form of treatment is known as mild therapeutic hypothermia. When the patient is in cardiac arrest, his/her body temperature is brought lower than 93.2 degrees Fahrenheit. When this method is used and the patient is revived, he/she should be kept in this state for around 24 hours. For this purpose, we can use fans, ice packs and cooling blankets.

THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP: TIMELY ACTION

Anyone who has ever heard of heart attacks is aware of the basic steps to be followed. But many people don’t realize that the main thing that is keep track of is time. The above mentioned steps will only make a difference if the patient is administered treatment ASAP. More the time spent on delays, greater will be the permanent damage to the patient.
